Gayle Wimer Obituary

Gayle Anne Wimer, 71, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at her home in Craddockville, VA, surrounded by loved ones. Born October 16, 1952 in Ticonderoga, NY, and raised in Crown Point, NY, she was a daughter of the late Douglas Eugene Holmes and Edna Eleanor Lethbridge Holmes.

Following high school, Gayle enlisted in the United States Navy. She retired in 1992, having served her country for 21 years. A woman of remarkable fortitude and self-reliance, Gayle took great pride in her independence and there was nothing she couldn’t do. Throughout her life, she found joy in simple pleasures, such as walking the beach and collecting shells, a passion that adorned her yard with memories of tranquil days by the ocean. Gayle’s affection for nature extended to her fondness for frogs and flamingos, with one cherished frog, a gift from her mother, accompanying her on a remarkable 45-year journey.

Gayle set the bar high for grandmothers. She loved assembling Lego sets, dinosaur movies were her favorite, and she was an avid reader. As much joy as Legos, movies, and reading gave her, nothing compared to the smiles and laughter shared with her grandsons. Her dedication to her family was sincere and extended to all. Gayle will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by her family, friends, and all who had the honor of sharing in her journey. May she rest in peace, her legacy enduring in the hearts of those who loved her.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Adam Wimer and his wife, Cathy, of Wilmington, DE; brother and sisters, Harold Francis Holmes of Craddockville, VA, Phyllis Lee Holmes of Virginia Beach, VA, Helen Celia Holmes and her husband, Scott Broder, of Coeur D’Alene, ID, and Arlene Marie Williams of Craddockville; grandchildren, Emmett Bowie Wimer, Jacob Wimer, Raymond Johnson, and Benjamin Durr; and several nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her brother, Richard Douglas Holmes (1998).

The family will gather privately to celebrate Gayle’s life.
