Life Legacy
Mr. Donald Reide Matthews, 79, of Temperanceville, VA, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, VA.
Born on December 23, 1932 in Parksley, Virginia, he was the son of the late Nora Justis Matthews and George “Frank” Matthews.
Donald was a lifelong resident of Accomack County and loved being on the Eastern Shore. He served four years in the Air Force, in the USAF Technical School during the Korean War. He had an accomplished 31-year career at NASA Wallops Island as an engineering technician, and after his retirement worked as a Deputy Sheriff for Accomack and Northampton counties. Working with the Fire Department was always Donald’s passion. He began volunteering at the Parksley Fire Department when he was 16 years old; later served as the Secretary and President of the Bi-County Firemen’s Association; and as the Accomack County Fire Marshall. He also served as an EMT instructor and fire sciences instructor. Since his retirement from NASA and the Sheriff’s department, Donald spent his free time serving at church, reading, and talking with friends.
Donald leaves behind his wife of seven years, Ruby Loggins Matthews; six children, Brian Matthews of Columbia, MD, Brenda Cudone of Forest Hill, MD, Bruce Matthews and his wife Lisa of Clarksville, MD, Kimberly Robertello and her husband Steve of Pullman, WA, Bryan Matthews and his wife Amanda of Louisiana, and Jeffrey Matthews and his wife Krystle of Temperanceville; and eleven grandchildren. Donald was predeceased by his sister, Frieda Belle Matthews, who died as a young child.
Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Parksley Funeral Home on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 2:00 PM with the Reverends Billy Balderson and Raymond Crowley officiating. There will be a visitation at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Liberty Cemetery in Parksley.
